Young Investigator Research Award for Early Exploration

The Egg Nutrition Center (ENC), in collaboration with the American Egg Board (AEB), is pleased to announce our 2016 Young Investigator Research Award for Early Exploration competition (formerly the ENC Dissertation Fellowship Award). These awards are to assist students and post-doctoral fellows in producing preliminary research results that will support future studies or enhance the scope of current research projects beyond funding limits. Examples of the types of projects include proof-of-concept studies, pre-clinical data, secondary data analysis from clinical trials, and development of research methodology. Specific ENC research priorities for 2016 include unique benefits/identification of bioactives in eggs; the role of eggs in sustainable dietary patterns; benefits of the nutrient package of eggs across the lifespan (with an emphasis on early childhood and older adult).

Eligibility

Applicants should be Ph.D. degree candidates or post-doctoral fellows studying nutrition or nutrition-related fields at an accredited university.

Criteria for Selection

  • Evidence of superior academic achievement
  • Likelihood of pursuing a career in teaching and/or research in the field of nutrition in the U.S.
  • Proposed work is of high scientific merit
  • Research can be realistically completed in 1 year

Application Instructions

A Letter of Intent (LOI) will be used for the initial screening. The LOI is limited to 2 pages, single spaced, 11-point Arial font. The LOI should contain: title of the proposal, applicant name and contact information, applicant year of study, department and university name, brief introduction that provides a statement of the proposed work’s objectives, methods, brief budget justification, and significance/ relevance to eggs. The applicant’s curriculum vitae and a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s advisor should accompany the LOI. These three documents should be sent as one attachment to [email protected].

Selected applicants will be invited to submit a complete proposal. Applicants will be notified on or before January 15, 2016. Full proposals (by invitation) will be due February 19, 2016.

Funding

Awards will be issued in the form of a one-year stipend up to $20,000. Please note that the USDA authorization for ENC research allows a maximum indirect cost recovery of 10%. Award winners must agree to contribute one article to the ENC e-newsletter, Nutrition Research Update.
